Elisa Noguera Lopez creates still-life photographs from animals and birds that you wouldn’t ordinarily think of as being subjects for a still-life. For one of her projects she has photographed 100 chickens and an egg.
The concept of idolising a chicken is interesting since, for many a chicken is the prototypical image of the mass production system at its worst, battery chickens trapped in their cages, stripped of any thought or compassion, their only role to produce eggs; a machine rather than a work of art.
We do not normally see chickens on a pedestal. It brings into question our thoughts about beauty and how we perceive it. Chickens are not normally thought of as beautiful creatures, but here we are forced to consider them as so. This then creates a conflict with our traditional view of a chicken, trapped in its tiny cage. By contrasting these two thoughts the artist makes us think of beauty in a much wider context; confronting why we think some things, people or creatures are more deserving of our consideration as being beautiful.
